Endometrial Polyps

What are endometrial polyps?

Endometrial polyps are usually benign growths from the lining of the uterus. They may cause irregular bleeding, heavy periods, bleeding between periods or bleeding after menopause.

What treatments can be offered?

• Assessment with pelvic ultrasound and hysteroscopy where appropriate.
• Hysteroscopic removal of the polyp, often as a day-case procedure.
• Laboratory testing of removed tissue and follow-up care based on symptoms, age and individual risk factors.

When to seek advice

Seek advice for bleeding between periods, unusually heavy bleeding, bleeding after sex, or any bleeding after menopause.
