Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Heavy or prolonged periods can affect energy, daily activities, work and quality of life.
What is heavy menstrual bleeding?
Heavy menstrual bleeding means periods that are unusually heavy, prolonged or difficult to manage. It may include flooding, passing clots, needing to change protection very often, or symptoms of anaemia such as tiredness and dizziness.
What treatments can be offered?
- Assessment with history, examination, blood tests, ultrasound or hysteroscopy where appropriate.
- Medical options such as tranexamic acid, anti-inflammatory medication, hormonal tablets or a hormonal intrauterine system.
- Procedures such as hysteroscopic treatment, endometrial ablation, treatment of fibroids or polyps, or hysterectomy when appropriate.
When to seek advice
Seek advice if periods are affecting normal life, if bleeding occurs between periods, after sex or after menopause, or if symptoms such as pelvic pain, dizziness or severe tiredness are present.
